Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe experiences of interpersonal relationships between nursing students and clients in psychiatric settings.
Methods: Data was collected through focus groups and individual voice recorded interviews. The data was
then analyzed using qualitative contents analysis.
Results: The participants were nineteen nursing students, all of whom were third year university students, who had completed their first clinical practice in a psychiatric unit. Through this study the subsequent three major categories were discovered: ¡¯Entering into relationship¡¯ was the first experience in which participants met with clients and started one-to-one relationships. Second, ¡¯Interacting with each other¡¯ was a major experience through which participants experienced positive and negative feelings towards their clients. Finally, ¡¯Bringing down the curtain on relationships¡¯ was when participants ended their relationships and experienced the sorrow of parting.
Conclusion: After considering the results of this study, we can conclude that nursing education ought to focus more on helping nursing students develop competence in the area of interpersonal relationships.
